GM to Start Facing Personal Injury Trials This January

Detroit, Michigan-based automaker General Motors is gearing up to face at least sixteen personal injury lawsuits in the wake of accidents allegedly caused by a defective ignition switch in their vehicles that allowed cars to go into “accessory” mode during operation. In accessory mode, the vehicles’ engines shut off, the power steering is rendered useless, and the airbags are unable to deploy. The first of what is shaping up to be many trials for GM began on Monday, January 11 in Manhattan.

According to evidence provided to lawmakers in congressional hearings, GM knew that their vehicles had defective ignition switches but refused to divulge that information to the public so as to avoid the expense of repairs, a fix that would have cost the company 90 cents per vehicle.
