Texas Has Not yet Adopted State Laws Against Texting and Driving

Over four years of investigating vehicular accidents in the Austin Police Department’s Highway Enforcement Unit, Officer Jason Borne has never met someone who freely admitted that he caused an accident because he was texting while driving, according to the Dallas Morning News on July 17.

Because it is not common to admit fault in an accident, it’s difficult for Texas law enforcement agencies to monitor if new measures that aim to curb distracted driving accidents, such as Austin’s new ban on using hand-held electronic devices while driving, are actually effective.

And the fact that Texas legislators have once again refused to enact a statewide ban on texting while driving – a move that would foster uniformity regarding this particular driving behavior – does not help the situation, according to activists.
