A new U.S. study released on Nov. 23 has revealed a rise in the number of infant deaths in the U.S. caused by crib bumpers, which calls for a ban on these padded blankets that cover crib slats.
The study by the Washington University School of Medicine reported that between 2006 and 2012, there were 23 infant deaths linked to the use of crib bumpers reported to the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC).
Reports said from 2006 to 2012 there were 23 deaths are being linked to the use of soft cushion wrapped around the cribs. This number is three times higher than the average number of deaths reported in the previous seven-year time spans.
“They are dangerous; don’t use them,” says Dr. Bradley Thach, professor emeritus of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine.
Some cities around the country, such as Chicago, have already banned the sale of crib bumpers. Researchers are hoping for a nationwide ban on crib bumpers, which were originally intended to stop babies from falling out of the crib, but have since been linked to highly preventable infant deaths caused by suffocation.
