Austin Hit and Run Accidents Increasing

Hit and run accidents in the Austin area have been increasing over the past several years, according to Austin Police Department statistics. A total of more than 600 of these incidents, in fact, have occurred since 2012, placing Austin motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in serious danger.

In response, new legislation that will considerably increase the potential penalties for hit and run drivers is set to take effect. Penalties for fatalities resulting from a hit and run accident will be increased to a maximum of 20 years in prison, double the current maximum of 10 years. Additionally, failing to stop and render aid to individuals injured in a hit and run accident will now be punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
