Vic's invitation to speak on the legal implications of AI reflects decades of hands-on courtroom experience paired with his forward-thinking approach about where the profession and the law overall are heading next.
During his session, Vic addressed a trend that is quickly becoming impossible to ignore: attorneys turning to AI tools to help draft legal opinions, arguments, and other court-related documents. On its surface, this kind of technology promises efficiency. But Vic looked at the complications that come with it, including the risk of factual inaccuracies making their way into filings, the danger of attorneys leaning on AI output without applying their own independent judgment, and the broader ethical question of what is lost when legal reasoning is outsourced to a machine rather than shaped by a lawyer's own experience and discernment.
Furthermore, Vic is currently collaborating with Professor James Marcum of Baylor University on the ethical and relational implications of AI in personal injury law specifically, examining how these same technologies may affect the attorney-client relationship and the human element of representing injured people. Professor Marcum brings a layered academic background to this partnership because he holds doctorates in both philosophy and physiology, along with a graduate degree in theological studies, and spent nearly two decades on the faculty at Harvard Medical School following postdoctoral work at Harvard and MIT. That kind of interdisciplinary depth makes him a fitting collaborator for a conversation that sits at the intersection of technology and ethics.
